From Fragments, Flight - Field Notes
A procession of small birds crossing a textured field of fiery reds and deep teal, each stitched, cut, and layered from fragments of other memories. Rich tones captured under drops of water and recaptured texture pulse through the surface like notes in a landscape journal.
Process
Each piece in the From Fragments, Flight series is built through Kuki’s layered mixed-media process. Backgrounds are created with acrylics, enamels, fluid paints, and textured mediums, sometimes combined with water-based techniques (liquid or frozen) to create soft shifts and organic surfaces.
The birds begin as fragments of earlier works. Sections of previous paintings and remnant materials are cut down, reshaped, and rebuilt into new forms. Every element is placed by hand and finished with a combination of free-motion machine stitching and hand embroidery. All linework is physically sewn into the surface. Nothing is printed or simulated. The result is a one-of-one textile-meets-painting hybrid that looks simple at first glance but reveals more detail the longer you sit with it.
