Process

Each piece in the From Fragments, Flight collection is built through Kuki’s layered mixed-media process. Backgrounds are created with acrylics, enamels, fluid paints, and textured mediums, sometimes combined with water-based techniques (liquid or frozen) to create soft shifts and organic surfaces.

The birds begin as fragments of earlier works. Painted papers and sections of previous paintings are cut down, reshaped, and rebuilt into new forms. Every element is placed by hand and finished with a combination of free-motion machine stitching and hand embroidery. All linework is physically sewn into the surface. Nothing is printed or simulated. The result is a one-of-one textile-meets-painting hybrid that looks simple at first glance but reveals more detail the longer you sit with it.
